If you follow Whale Heart Records, you’ve probably noticed that we had some pretty definite release dates on our top two releases and both those dates have come and gone pretty long ago. There’s a story to this and if you’ll indulge me, I’ll tell it.

Basically the long and short of it is, I was working on designing the cover for the CDs for Pacific Theater’s “Animals At Night” and Little Horn’s “Such Pretty Houses” and not loving what I was doing. I kept scrapping stuff and getting discouraged. I was waiting on checks from jobs I’d done a while ago and one morning I woke up freaking out and realized the CD format is a dodo bird.

I thought about the last time I’d actually purchased a CD and how I immediately regretted it because a week later it came out on vinyl (Grizzly Bear’s “Friend” EP I think it was). I don’t buy CDs and while sometimes I still pull out my old Hum, Pavement or Sebadoh CDs, I usually just turn on iTunes or listen to what I have on vinyl.

So anyway, Whale Heart Records is a boutique record label. We’re not in it to make a ton of money, because that just ain’t gonna happen any time soon. We love cool products, so we’re going to focus on making our products worth buying. And that for us means vinyl and coming up with creative packaging ideas and remix albums and 7” splits, all the while having each release available for download right here through this site.

Starting in October we’ll have our first vinyl product available for sale, Pacific Theater’s “Animals At Night” LP. We’re really excited about it. It’ll come with a free download of the album and we’ll have other options if you just want to download it. We’ll also have Little Horn and Duchess Leo available for download through our site.

Hope you are all as excited as I am about having fun with this. It’s all about getting the music we make out there in a way that we’re proud of.

Thanks,
Daniel
